Strawberries again at Burlington Farmers Market! Come early if you want them. Last week they were sold out by 9 am! If you miss the berries don’t fret. We will also have another batch of delicious fruit popsicles to beat the weekend heat.

Pray for warmth this weekend for all the Vermont farmers. Deep freezes are predicted for the next three nights in a row. We have attempted to cover all of the strawberry and blueberry blossoms that are vulnerable in hopes that they will make it through the frigid nights ahead. Think heat wave please!

Saturday was a beautiful day. We had an amazing turnout a the Crop Mob held at the berry farm. Close to 30 people generously volunteered their time to assist in covering one of our hoophouses that we grow early season strawberries under. Every year I am touched by the willingness and kindness of our community to help out with this arduous undertaking. Thanks so much to all that showed up to help and to City Market for the organization of the event.

Let the experiment begin! Last week we covered a section of newly planted blueberries under a hoop house (an un-heated greenhouse). The variety we chose is called “Duke”. It was selected because they produce some of the earliest season blueberries that grow in our region. The hope is that the hoop house warms the soils and air enough create an accelerated spring and in turn early start to blueberry season. Now we wait…

I thought I was an urban farmer, nope! I was in NYC last week and visited Battery Urban Farms in lower Manhattan. The transition from skyscraper to productive vegetable land was stark and beautiful. The subway actually went underneath the land. Wonder if the subterrainian vibrations aid in plant growth….

Should I grow kiwifruit? This picture is of an arctic kiwi that believe it or not is cold hardy in Vermont. They are about the size of a grape or cherry tomato but with the taste and appearance of a mini fuzzless kiwi. The bright tropical taste seems out of place for our northern regions but they have proven to be a reliable producer despite our cold nip. I am thinking about trying them out at the farm.

One of the winter projects we have embarked on is making blueberry wine vinegar. We start by making wine out of blueberries from the farm. Next we inoculate it with a vinegar culture which converts the alcohol into vinegar. Lastly it is aged for a year in French oak to condition the vinegar before we bring it to farmers market. This photo is of the final stage of the wine fermentation.

It is nice to be finally posting good news… I just finished planting 266 Duke blueberries that I am going to construct a hoop house over. This is an very early and productive variety that we have not tried at the farm before. I am hoping that by having them undercover we will have ripe blueberries about 2-3 weeks ahead of the normal fruiting period. Let the experiment begin.

HI friends and family,
Thanks for all the well wishes in regards to the storm. All in all I am fine but it has been a challenging week both physically and emotionally. My home and personal health are good but the farm was hit pretty hard with chest high flooding. This marks the 6th major flood of the season! This spring we had 5 floods that wiped out 3 acres of raspberries, about an acre of strawberries and a half acre of grapes. The wet spring weather led us in to drought like conditions for the rest of the summer. With dry weather I started replanting all of the strawberries a portion of the raspberries that I lost in efforts to recover from the previous impact. Everything looked good until last Sunday when Irene hit. 6 inches of rain created swollen, bank jumping rivers which immersed any low lying areas. For those that do not know, I farm in a fertile river delta so… we were inundated. Unfortunately it looks like most of the strawberries and raspberries have been lost again but I am hoping that the blueberries will be ok with minimal long term impact. Time will tell.
There have been some positives out of this disaster. The community that I live in has been tremendous. Loyal customers have been offering to help in any way possible. Honestly the outpouring of support has been overwhelming. The other positive is that the flooding has pushed me to investigate moving to higher ground that does not flood in our shifting climate. This is exciting in that it will allow me to expand my operation through increased diversity, creativity and stability. It also means that I will be able to minimize the risk in my annual gamble of farming. I am looking to keep on growing berries but expand in to pears, plums, peaches, cherries and grapes in this new quest. I will keep you posted.Amazingly, through all of this I feel lucky to still love what I do. I know farming is crazy to most of you but I am humbled and rewarded by my daily work. I feel as though growing food for your community is one of the more important roles in society.

SOLD OUT - please call the restaurant to be added to the waiting list. Saturday, September 10: Burlington Ensemble benefit concert for the Intervale Center Farmers Recovery Fund at Champlain College. This star-studded concert will feature internationally renowned violinist Soovin Kim (Artistic Director, Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival) and include a live art auction featuring works from beloved local artists Bonnie Acker and Katharine Montstream.
